That he/she didn't participate in the NYSC doesn't mean they don't graduate from school

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a program set up by the Nigerian government during the military regime to involve Nigerian graduates in nation building and the development of the country. There is no military conscription in Nigeria, but since 1973 graduates of universities and later polytechnics have been required to take part in the National Youth Service Corps program for one year. This is known as national service year

To be eligible to participate in the compulsory one year service,

A graduate must be below or not above the age of 30 years upon graduation, or else he/she will be given a Certificate of Exemption, which is also equivalent to the NYSC Discharge Certificate. A graduate who graduated before 30 years but skipped the service year, will still be eligible since his certificate of graduation was dated before he clocked 30 years of age. NYSC is compulsory in the sense that the graduates of the country can't request an exemption by themselves unless they are disabled, have served in the military or paramilitary for a period of more than one year, or are older than 30 when they graduated. Part-time graduates (CEP) are given exemptions since they're not allowed to serve

NYSC is a good and important program for Nigeria graduates when seeking for white caller job. Though it’s very bad to discriminate or judge unjustly, someone who is not privileged to participate in the Compulsory one year service for some unforeseen circumstances.

Our people need to know that there are many reasons why some graduates don’t participate in NYSC which is not necessarily what an ordinary person in the street thinking of.

The reason why some graduates don’t go to service.

The number one reason why you will not be able to see some people bother about going to service even when they graduated with the FIRST CLASS grade in their school, is because they are not eligible to participate, Do you know most graduates don’t serve because they exceeded 30 years of age before graduating. In the NYSC constitution it’s clearly stated that for one to be eligible to participate in the compulsory one year service, a graduate must be below or not above the age of 30 years upon graduation, or else he/she will be given a certificate of exemption, which also equivalent to NYSC Discharge Certificate.

NYSC Discharge Certificate is the certificate given to a graduate who participated in the compulsory one year service.

NYSC Certificate of Exemption is a certificate given to graduates who are:

  • Older than 30 years before graduation
  • who has served in the military or paramilitary for a period of more than one year.
  • Disabled.

Note: Part-Time graduates (CEP) are also given certificates of exemption since they’re not allowed to serve.

These are the main factor why some graduates don’t participate in the compulsory one year service.

The number two reason why some of the graduates don’t go to service- is when that student could not graduate from school. Though this particular reason is very rare to see in our society. Why because the dreams of every undergraduate before taking the bold step to enter school, are to graduate and to also participate in the compulsory one year service and to make a living with their certificate.

In this paragraph, I will highlight more on why students in university don’t graduate when others are graduating.

The main reason why students don’t graduate are:

Dropping out of school: Dropping out from school is one of the main reasons why students don’t graduate from school, though there are many factors that will make a student to drooped out of school.

Some of the reasons are:

  • Some people dropped out of school simply because they no longer found studying interesting.
  • Some dropped out of school because they could not be able to pay their school need anymore.
  • Some dropped out of school because of carryovers,

Do you know that there will be an amount of carryover one will get in school, he/she will choose to dropped out from school than to continue just because they can’t withstand the shame anymore. Although some people from this category will choose to clear all their carryovers to be able to graduate from the school like others. It doesn’t matter to them the kind of grade they will be graduating with, so far they can bear that Title “I am a graduate".

The Number three reason why some graduates don’t go to service is when the student gets expelled from the school (Expulsion).

Expulsion is when a student is banned from the school system or University due to persistently violation of that school’s rules.

There are many reasons why students are being expelled from school.

  • The Number one reason is when a student is being deliberately disobedient and disorderly
  • The Number two reason is when a student is being violent
  • The Number three reason is when a student is hurting or threatening to hurt someone with dangerous weapons.

People of the street, I think you people were able to know most reasons why graduate are not been able to participate in NYSC and not what you think might be the reason.
